What The Bible Says About
The Deity Of Jesus Christ

"Whom say ye that I am?"
Jesus Christ - Mark 8:29

The following Bible verses confirm that Jesus Christ has the exact same divine attributes as God Almighty (Jehovah God):

Both Jehovah and Jesus are called Saviour:

Jehovah:

Isaiah 43:11 - "I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour."

Jesus:

Philippians 3:20 - "For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ"

Titus 1:4 - " To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour."

Titus 2:13 - "Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;"

Titus 3:4-6 - "But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;"

Both Jehovah and Jesus are called Judge:

Jehovah:

Isaiah 33:22 - "For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us."

Jesus:

2 Timothy 4:1 - "I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;"

Both Jehovah and Jesus have a judgment seat:

Jehovah/Christ:

Romans 14:10 - "But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God."

Jesus:

2 Corinthians 5:10 - " For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad."

Both God the Father (Jehovah) and Jesus sent the Holy Spirit:

Jehovah:

John 14:16-17 - "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you."

John 14:26 - "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."

Jesus:

John 15:26 - "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:"

John 16:7 - " Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you."

Both Jehovah and Jesus are called the Shepherd:

Jehovah:

Psalms 23:1 - "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want."

Jesus:

John 10:11 - "I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep."

Both Jehovah and Jesus are called the Light:

Jehovah:

Psalms 27:1 - "The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"

Micah 7:8 - "Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me."

Jesus:

John 8:12 - "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."

Both Jehovah and Jesus are called Lord of Lords:

Jehovah:

Deuteronomy 10:17 - " For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:

Jesus:

Revelation 17:14 - " These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful."

1 Corinthians 8:6 - "But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him."

Both Jehovah and Jesus are called the First and the Last:

Jehovah:

Isaiah 44:6 - "Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God."

Revelation 1:8 - "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty."

Jesus:

Revelation 1:17-18 - "And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death."

Revelation 22:12-13 - "And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last."

Both Jehovah and Jesus are called King:

Jehovah:

Isaiah 33:22 - "For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us."

Isaiah 44:6 - "Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God."

Jesus:

Revelation 17:14 - "These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful."

Both Jehovah and Jesus are Creator of all things:

Jehovah:

Genesis 1:1 - "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."

Hebrews 3:4 - "For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God."

Isaiah 44:24 - "Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;"

Jesus:

Colossians 1:13-17 - " Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist."

The exclusiveness of Christ:

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6)

Notice in the above verse that Jesus said 'I am the way'. He did not say religion is the way or a church is the way or some organization is the way. Anyone trying to get to heaven by following the works-based salvation program of some organization are thieves and robbers:

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber." (John 10:1).

It is crucial that we determine if in fact, Jesus really is eternal God. If Jesus truly is Almighty God and we refuse to worship Him as such, then we are doomed to destruction:

"... the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction" (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9)

An essential element of obeying the Gospel, is recognizing who Christ is and what He accomplished here on earth. He is eternal God He has to be eternal God, in order to act as the sin-bearer, the atoning sacrifice, for all the sins of all those whom He came to save. No other sin-bearer would suffice. Only eternal God could pay an infinite price for all the sins of all the elect of God. Only eternal God is capable of paying the penalty required by Divine justice. That is because the penalty for sin is eternity in Hell:

"And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night" (Rev 14:11a)

What About Jesus being just 'a god'?

Nowhere in the Bible is polytheism (belief in more than one god) recommended but rather it is strongly condemned. Polytheism is what results when John 1:1 is incorrectly interpreted to say "and the Word was a god." Exodus 20:3 makes this point very clear: "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." Additionally, no one but the living and true God is capable of paying for all of the sins of the entire world. It is no accident that the Messiah is called "mighty God" and "everlasting Father" in Isaiah 9:6. Some claim (though not conclusively) that the term 'mighty God' used here is referring to someone other than the 'almighty God' but it can't be said that 'everlasting Father' means something other than Jehovah God. Why is the Messiah called everlasting Father, if Jesus is not identified with God the Father?

In John Chapter 8 it is clear that the Jews who wanted to stone Jesus for blasphemy knew that Jesus was calling himself Almighty God when he referred to himself as the 'I am': "Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. Then took they up stones to cast at him" (John 8:58, 8:59). Exodus 3:14 gives further proof of this point: "And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you." In John 8:58, Jesus was calling himself the I AM of Exodus 3:14! This point is confirmed in John 10:32-33: "Jesus answered them, Many good works have I showed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God."

Another strong statement about Christ being God Almighty is found in 1 Timothy 3:16: "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."

Perhaps the most wonderful example of the deity of Jesus Christ is found in John chapter 20:

"Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed." (John 20:27-29)

Have you been blessed like Thomas was? Have you seen that Jesus is Lord and God?

Do you now see that Jesus is the living and eternal God whom you need to worship and obey and surrender your will to?
