What Happened To The Gospel?

OK, so why do so many "bible-believing" fundamentalist churches preach "another" gospel?

Because they think what they preach IS the gospel.  For one thing, it sounds good.  And besides that, almost all the Bible colleges and seminaries teach it nowadays.  You can easily make a case for it from the Bible.  BUT it is not the TRUE gospel! It is still a works gospel, and therefore a FALSE gospel that will save no one, because it still depends on the spiritually dead sinner to do something that GOD says he (the sinner) CANNOT DO (namely repent) without God FIRST giving him a new heart via the new birth.  This false gospel is the FREE-WILL gospel.  Many well meaning, and perhaps truly saved Christians, pass out millions of gospel tracts promoting this FALSE gospel.  Here are the names of some of those tracts:

  • The Romans Road

  • Four Spiritual Laws

  • Salvation Is As Easy As ABC

  • God's Bridge To Eternal Life

  • Steps To Peace With God

Most modern gospel tracts are GIMMICK tracts...

They make the unsaved think that the new birth is achieved by reciting a sinner's prayer.  They may also say: "All you have to do is believe in Christ or believe this or that."   The problem with that methodology, is twofold:  For one thing, it puts the sinner in the driver's seat, at the control of his salvation, when in reality, it is God who has mercy on whom He will have mercy.  Secondly, lost people are not capable of believing the truth of the Gospel.  They are spiritually blind, deaf, dumb and dead.  They CANNOT and WILL NOT see themselves as God sees them: as thoroughly morally corrupt, through and through and incapable of turning to God, incapable of worshipping Him in spirit and in truth, UNTIL and UNLESS God first gives that rebellious sinner a new heart.

Where did this false gospel come from?

It has been around since the beginning of time.  Fallen man has always wanted to think that he is better than God says he is.  Man wants to think he is not completely at the mercy of God and has, within his own power, the ability to get saved whenever he chooses.  Some of the more recent individuals who greatly popularized this free-will gospel and marketed it in such an attractive way include D. L. Moody, Charles Finney, and Billy Graham.  Nowadays, practically ALL TV and radio evangelists preach and promote this man-centered gospel.  Most pastors preach it from their pulpits and in their Sunday school classes.
