The First Halloween Costume

“The LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” [1Samuel 16:7]

Did you ever wonder what the first halloween costume was like? Well wonder no further.  The question has now been answered.  The first halloween costume was a set of his-and-hers clothing made with fig leaves.  That’s right!  It was worn by Adam and Eve.  Ever since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, man has been trying to hide his sin and pretend he is something that he isn’t.  He likes to cover up his own sin, point out the sins of others to make himself look better and pretend that he isn’t all that much of a sinner – using his own standards of righteousness rather than God’s standards.

“For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.” [Romans 10:3]

To this day, and as we can see so evidently on this holiday called “halloween”, we witness man’s desire to hide who he really is.  But God sees through any mask and any costume.  He knows everything about you, even the things you don’t remember and the things you’ve done in secret that you thought would never be found out.  God knows how wicked and sinful your heart really is, even though you may think you’re not such a bad person, especially when you compare yourself to other people who *you* think are far worse sinners than yourself.

“GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” [Genesis 6:5]

And as the outward morality of our society declines more and more (along with the inward morality), this so-called “holiday” becomes more and more openly evil.  Its celebrants become increasingly focused on death and violence, sin and sacrilege. They are becoming ever more preoccupied with – and even obsessed with – this holiday over and above all other holidays.  What the general population once called decadent and obscene, today’s society now considers acceptable and even fun and entertaining.

“There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.” [Proverbs 30:12]
