The Five Articles of the Remonstrants

(Arminian Heresy)

These are often referred to as the 5 points of Arminianism, a “free-will” heresy to which the 5 points of Calvinism were written to address.

Article 1.

[Conditional Election – corresponds to the second of TULIP’s five points, Unconditional Election]

That God, by an eternal and unchangeable purpose in Jesus Christ his Son before the foundation of the world, has determined that out of the fallen, sinful race of men, to save in Christ, for Christ’s sake, and through Christ, those who through the grace of the Holy Spirit shall believe on this his son Jesus, and shall persevere in this faith and obedience of faith, through this grace, even to the end; and, on the other hand, to leave the incorrigible and unbelieving in sin and under wrath and to condemn them as alienated from Christ, according to the word of the Gospel in John 3:36: “He that believes on the Son has everlasting life: and he that does not believe the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him,” and according to other passages of Scripture also.

Article 2.

[Unlimited Atonement – corresponds to the third of TULIP’s five points, Limited Atonement]

That, accordingly, Jesus Christ the Savior of the world, died for all men and for every man, so that he has obtained for them all, by his death on the cross, redemption and the forgiveness of sins; yet that no one actually enjoys this forgiveness of sins except the believer, according to the word of the Gospel of John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  And in the First Epistle of John 2:2: “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”

Article 3.

[Deprivation – corresponds to the first of TULIP’s five points, Total Depravity]

That man does not posses saving grace of himself, nor of the energy of his free will, inasmuch as in his state of apostasy and sin he can of and by himself neither think, will, nor do any thing that is truly good (such as saving Faith eminently is); but that it is necessary that he be born again of God in Christ, through his Holy Spirit, and renewed in understanding, inclination, and will, and all his faculties, in order that he may rightly understand, think, will, and effect what is truly good, according to the Word of Christ, John 15:5, “Without me you can do nothing.”

Article 4.

[Resistible Grace – corresponds to the fourth of TULIP’s five points, Irresistible Grace]

That this grace of God is the beginning, continuance, and accomplishment of all good, even to the extent that the regenerate man himself, without prevenient or assisting, awakening, following and cooperative grace, can neither think, will, nor do good, nor withstand any temptations to evil; so that all good deeds or movements that can be conceived must be ascribed to the grace of God in Christ. But with respect to the mode of the operation of this grace, it is not irresistible, since it is written concerning many, that they have resisted the Holy Spirit (Acts 7, and elsewhere in many places).

Article 5.

[Assurance and Security – corresponds to the fifth of TULIP’s five points, Perseverance of the Saints]

That those who are incorporated into Christ by true faith, and have thereby become partakers of his life-giving Spirit, as a result have full power to strive against Satan, sin, the world, and their own flesh, and to win the victory; it being well understood that it is ever through the assisting grace of the Holy Spirit; and that Jesus Christ assists them through his Spirit in all temptations, extends to them his hand, and if only they are ready for the conflict, desire his help, and are not inactive, keeps them from falling, so that they, by no deceit or power of Satan, can be misled nor plucked out of Christ’s hands, according to the Word of Christ, John 10:28: “Neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” But whether they are capable, through negligence, of forsaking again the first beginning of their life in Christ, of again returning to this present evil world, of turning away from the holy doctrine which was delivered them, of losing a good conscience, of neglecting grace, that must be more particularly determined out of the Holy Scripture, before we ourselves can teach it with the full confidence of our mind.

These Articles, thus set forth and taught, the Remonstrants deem agreeable to the Word of God, tending to edification, and, as regards this argument, sufficient for salvation, so that it is not necessary or edifying to rise higher or to descend deeper.

Am I an Arminian?

Many professing Christians who consider themselves to be “bible-believing” and “evangelical” often have no idea what Arminianism is and that it is the name for the brand of salvation that most churches preach in place of the true Gospel. Arminianism is a doctrine promoted by Jacobus Arminius hundreds of years ago.  This doctrine has crept into the Christian church and has pushed out the true Gospel in most mainline Christian denominations and non-denominational churches of our day.  In order for people to accept this doctrine, its teachers ignore many verses throughout the bible that contradict the various false premises that Arminianism is based upon.

Some of the false premises that you probably have been taught:

1. God loves everyone.

  • The bible does not teach this.  Just read Psalm 5:5, Psalm 11:5, and Romans 9 for example.

2. God wants to save everybody but He is a gentleman who would never force His will on anyone.

  • The bible says God does the choosing and changes the will that is in bondage to sin into a will that is a slave to righteousnes.

3. God votes for you, the devil votes against you and its up to you to break the tie.

  • The truth is an unsaved sinner is in total rebellion to God and will never vote for God without first receiving a changed heart from God.

4. Salvation is like a drowning man and a life preserver.  YOU are the drowning man, Jesus is the life preserver and it’s up to you grab the life preserver to save yourself.

  • The bible declares that people are spiritually dead and therefore incabable and uninterested in reaching out to God for salvation.  God must make the sinner willing to come to Christ which He does when He saves a sinner.

5. God is knocking at the door of your heart waiting for you to open it so He can save you.

  • It’s God’s world and He does as He pleases as stated throughout the Bible.  For example:

“All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?” [Daniel 4:35]

“… who hath resisted his will?” [Romans 9:19]

Tulip Or Weeds?

by Daniel Parks

Is salvation the work of God alone? or of man cooperating with God? Is salvation bestowed by God’s grace alone? or does man merit it through an act of self-righteousness performed by his own free will?

Church history is highlighted by confrontations on this doctrine. Those who preach salvation involves man’s free will and works have ever opposed those who preach salvation by God’s grace alone. Scribes and Pharisees opposed Jesus Christ and the apostles. In the fifth century, disciples of Pelagius opposed disciples of Augustine. During the Middle Ages, Roman Catholics opposed Anabaptists and, from 1517, Protestants. And from 1611, Arminians (free-willers) have opposed Calvinists.

These two beliefs are identified by the acronyms WEEDS and TULIP.

Are you a TULIP basking in God’s sovereign grace?

Or are you among the WEEDS, boasting of self-righteousness?

As you examine the table below, you will see that the references to Bible verses in the right column are verses that the Arminians (free-willers) either ignore, misunderstand or don’t even acknowledge.  It is easy to see how people can fall into the trap of believing the free-will gospel when they completely ignore verses that state the opposite of what they believe about man, God and salvation.  As with any Bible doctrine, it is easy to make a case for your particular interpretation if you and your hearers examine only one or two verses in isolation.  And of course it is natural for people to NOT believe the true Gospel of salvation by grace alone if they do not possess that salvation but are still dead in their trespasses and sins.  It is also natural for the unsaved to think that they are free to choose Christ at any time, when in reality, the God of the Bible says they are totally in bondage to sin, lost and unable to come to Christ of their “own free will”.  Without a supernatural act of God – without a new heart and spirit – that will remains in rebellion to the true Savior and true Gospel.

WEEDS

THE FALSE FREE-WILL GOSPEL INVOLVING MAN’S WILL

TULIP

THE TRUE GOSPEL OF SALVATION BY GOD’S GRACE ALONE

Will of Man Is Free

Mankind is influenced by sin, but not under its dominion, as all yet have free will and the ability to determine their own destiny. Anyone can of his own free will come to Christ for salvation. All men have faith, but not all will exercise it.

Total Depravity –

Mankind is spiritually dead and under the dominion of sin (Ephesians 2:1-3; John 8:34). None will of his own will come to Christ for salvation (John 5:40; 6:65). None has faith unless God graciously bestows it (Ephesians 2:8).

Election Is Conditional –

Election to salvation involves both the sinner choosing God and God choosing the sinner. God’s choice was conditioned upon man’s choice, as God chose in eternity past those whom he foresaw in time believing in Jesus Christ for salvation.

Unconditional Election –

God the Father has graciously chosen and predestined to salvation some of our fallen race (2 Thessalonians 2:13; Ephesians 1:3-6). His choice was in no way conditioned upon foreseen good or merit in the chosen ones (John 15:16).

Every Man Is Redeemed –

Jesus Christ died for every one, paying the price of redemption for them all. But this does not guarantee their forgiveness, as many of His redeemed will be eventually damned because of unbelief.

Limited Atonement

Jesus Christ died as the substitute of God’s elect, forever redeeming and forgiving them (Isaiah 53:4-6,8b; Ephesians 1:7). He did not die for any who will die in unbelief (John 10:11,26).

Denial Confounds Grace –

The sovereignty of God does not extend to His salvation, as man’s will can here thwart God’s purpose. God is trying to save every sinner, but He is helpless to save any sinner who will not let Him.

Irresistible Grace

God will not be thwarted in His purpose of salvation (Daniel 4:35). Every one of His chosen and redeemed sinners will be brought to saving faith in Jesus Christ (John 5:37,45; Romans 8:29).

Some Will Lose Salvation –

God cannot preserve in salvation those who of their own free will refuse to be preserved. Those believers who do not remain faithful to the very end will lose their salvation, “fall from grace,” and eventually perish.

Perseverance Of The Saints –

God preserves in salvation all believers in Christ, and none will ever perish (Jude 24, John 3:16; 10:28). And He enables them to persevere to the end, so that none will be lost (Jeremiah 32:40; Romans 8:35-39).

“Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.” [Matthew 13:24-30]

DO YOU POSSESS TRUE SALVATION OR ARE YOU STILL CLINGING TO A MAN-CENTERED GOSPEL?
