Why The Catholic Church Cannot Be The “Pillar And Foundation Of Truth”

catholic church pillar ground foundation truth

“But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground [foundation] of the truth.” 1 Timothy 3:15

That statement of the apostle Paul in the first epistle to Timothy actually INVALIDATES Catholicism as the true Church. Why? Because the TRUE Church is known by its love for the TRUTH, the TRUTH of God’s word. The TRUE Church is the PILLAR that UPHOLDS God’s Word. Since the Catholic church denigrates Scripture, instead of upholding it as a pillar should, they PROVE that their church is NOT the true Church. Instead, the Catholic church is the pillar of their MAN-MADE traditions and their PAGAN religious practices upholding those things as equal to or higher than Scripture in authority. What Jesus said to the Pharisees in Mark 7:7 equally applies to the Catholic Church:

“Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” Mark 7:7

I realize that this message about the pillar may be very hard, if not impossible for Catholics to accept, but if a church or religion is going to make a claim about itself, it better be in agreement with Scripture, and not just Scripture taken in isolation and then chanted like it was some kind of “mantra” validating the people chanting it. I have been told by MANY Catholics online, that their Church is that “pillar” Paul mentioned in Scripture, yet if those Catholics really bothered to take a step back from the “forest” of Catholic teachings and practices to closely examine the “trees”, they would see that there are many unbiblical Catholic doctrines and rituals that disqualify the Catholic Church from being THE pillar of truth. However, since Catholics are so heavily indoctrinated into believing that their church doctrine is ALL TRUE, they cannot possibly SEE that their church is NOT the pillar of the truth that Paul spoke of in his letter to Timothy. Sadly, Catholics believe the many CLAIMS of their church regarding its authenticity, not realizing that those claims are based upon falsehoods, such as “Anything not found in the Bible is ‘church tradition’ or ‘oral tradition’ or ‘sacred oral tradition’, etc.”.

One very important rule of Bible interpretation that Catholics are often not aware of is that Scripture interprets Scripture – as Paul talked about in 1 Corinthians 2:13. So if we wish to rightly understand what Paul was talking about when he mentioned “truth” in that verse about the Church being the pillar, we need to see how the Bible describes or defines or uses the word “truth” elsewhere. A very good example of how the Bible defines “truth” is found in John 17:17, in a statement made by the Lord Jesus Christ as we see here:

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” John 17:17
